App store link shortener — without becoming a general shortener
“App store link shortener” sounds like a URL shortener with an app-shaped icon. It is not. The product that works is a link that routes by device, survives in-app browsers, and refuses arbitrary destinations that would turn your domain into an open redirect. This page is that distinction.
What do people mean by an “app store link shortener”?
They mean one short address that works on both iOS and Android, fits in a bio, and looks clean on a poster — not a general shortener for every link a company will ever publish. Those are different products: a store-link tool routes by device and survives in-app browsers, and a general shortener does neither. See AppIn vs flyn.to if you need every URL in one dashboard.
What a real app-link shortener has to do
- Route by device — App Store on iPhone, Play on Android, a sensible desktop page.
- Survive in-app browsers — Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and friends open their own browser; a raw store URL often dies there (Instagram, TikTok).
- Carry store campaign parameters when you need App Store Connect or Play Console rows — campaign parameters.
- Refuse becoming an open redirector — arbitrary destinations on a shared link domain are how domains get blocked.
What AppIn will not do
We will not market AppIn as a free Bitly. Free tiers that accept any URL are the main abuse door for phishing and malware, and that abuse lands on every customer sharing the same domain. Phone targets stay store listings (or named attribution providers). Desktop can use a fallback you control. The rule is written on pricing and in the product itself.
Firebase Dynamic Links used to cover “one link, both stores” for many teams; it shut down on 25 August 2025. Replacement is not “any shortener” — it is a tool that still does store routing.
How AppIn implements the short link
- You paste a store URL; we read the listing for icon, name and assets.
- You get
appin.to/your-slugor a custom domain. - Free plan: one link, one thousand clicks a month, no card to start.
- Paid plans raise limits and unlock analytics retention and custom domains.
When to choose something else
- You need deferred deep linking and install attribution → an MMP (AppsFlyer, Branch, …), optionally with AppIn in front.
- You need one product for newsletter, docs, careers and app links → a general link manager.
- You only ever share on desktop → a plain store URL may be enough.
If the job is a short, trustworthy app install link for mobile traffic — including traffic that starts inside social apps — an app-link tool is the right category, and AppIn is built only for that category.
Questions
- What is an app store link shortener?
- A single short URL that sends iPhone users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play, usually with a desktop landing page. It is not a general shortener for every website.
- Why not use Bitly or a free shortener?
- General shorteners do not specialise in store hand-offs or in-app browsers, and open redirectors attract abuse that can get a domain blocked inside apps.
- Does AppIn shorten any URL?
- No. Phone destinations must be store listings or allowlisted attribution links. That rule is enforced on create and on every repoint.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes on Pro. See the custom domain guide.
